• The Sherman Firefly Mk.VC was one of the most important British armored adaptations of the Second World War, created to address the urgent need for a tank capable of defeating heavily armored German vehicles. Based on the Sherman V (M4A4) hull, the Firefly mounted the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun, whose high velocity and penetration allowed Allied crews to engage Panthers and Tigers on more equal terms. Though the longer gun barrel and internal rearrangements posed challenges for crews, the Firefly quickly earned respect as a decisive battlefield asset.
• “Carole,” a Sherman Firefly Mk.VC serving with C Squadron of the 13th/18th Royal Hussars (Queen Mary’s Own), was part of the 27th Armoured Brigade during the Normandy landings in June 1944.
